Karel Aubrouck

De Runeleesster (1948)

In the design of the Boekentoren, van de Velde had planned the integration of works of art. In 1943 sculptor Karel Aubrouck was commissioned to create a sculpture, intended to be placed centrally in the inner courtyard. His 'Runeleesster' refers to the library as a place of study and thinking. In 1948 the statue was placed in the middle of the square pond in what is now the Quiet Garden.
